Spain Dominates At The 7th Edition Of Quirino Awards
Spain dominated at the 7th edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards, which were presented on Saturday in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. Productions from Spain won five of the ten awards presented.
The Spanish feature Robot Dreams, which has racked up a host of awards including multiple Goyas, the European Film Award, and the Annecy Contrechamp, in addition to an Oscar nomination, took home the prize for best animated feature, as well as the award for sound design and original music. The Pablo Berger-directed film opens in New York on May 31st, before expanding across the U.S. in June.
The prize for animation series also went to a Spanish production: the musical preschool series Jasmine & Jambo directed by Silvia Cortés and produced by Barcelona-based Teidees Audiovisuals in co-production with Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals. The series won the same prize at the Quirinos last year for its first season. The series stars two characters with a passion for music, relating it to life and emotions, and explaining musical concepts.
Marcus Vinicius Vasconcelos and Alois Di Leo’s 2d production from Brazil, Lulina and the Moon, took home the prize for short film. Di Leo previously won a Quirino in 2018 for his short Caminho dos Gigantes. Chile’s Punkrobot Studio won the commissioned animation prize for “In the Stars,” a segment for the Disney+ series Star Wars: Visions.
An honorary award was presented to Héctor and Liliana Cristiani, the grandson and great-granddaughter of Italian-Argentinian animator Quirino Cristiani, for whom the awards are named and who created the first animated feature film in history, the now-lost 1917 Argentine production El Apóstol (1917).
The jury for this year’s awards was comprised of Portuguese director José Miguel Ribeiro (Nayola), Colombian director Marcela Rincón (Lila’s Book), and U.K. director Wesley Louis (United Kingdom), along with Latvian public television head of acquisitions Zane Valeniece and Dandelooo co-founder and producer Emmanuèle Petry. A total of 247 works were submitted for consideration.
