Stop Motion Rules At 2022 Quirino Awards As ‘Bestia,’ ‘Bob Spit,’ ‘Frankelda’ Top Nominees
The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards have unveiled the nominees for this year’s fifth edition, honoring the best in animation from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.
Returning to its Canary Island home of Tenerife, the Quirinos will be held over May 12-14, inviting guests from both sides of the Atlantic to attend. More than a simple awards ceremony, the Quirinos also hosts a Co-Production Forum, a key event on the annual animation calendar for Ibero-American projects looking for partners.
This year, 258 qualifying animated works were submitted from the organization’s 18 participating countries. Traditional animation strongholds Brazil and Mexico lead the way with six nominations apiece, matched by Chile, a rising force in the region’s animation sector. Spain follows with five nominations of its own while Argentina and Peru each notched three, Colombia and Uruguay two, and each of Ecuador, Portugal, Dominican Republic, and Venezuela received a single nomination.
2022 Oscar-nominated short Bestia, directed by Chile’s Hugo Covarrubias, and Bob Spit – We Do Not Like People, from Brazil’s Coala Filmes and director Cesar Cabral, lead the pack with four nominations each. The first season of Frankelda’s Book of Spooks earned three nominations for Mexican producers Cinema Fantasma, and Peruvian box office hit Ainbo Spirit of the Amazon, which grossed nearly $10 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo, notched two nominations.
