Nominees Announced For 2025 Quirino Awards Honoring The Best In Ibero-American Animation
The Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards have unveiled the nominees for this year’s eighth edition, honoring the best in animation from Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.
This year, 26 titles from ten countries have been nominated to compete at the awards. Spain leads with the most nominations (12), followed by Brazil (8), Portugal (5), and Chile (3).
The winners will be announced on May 10 in a ceremony held in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on the Canary Island of Tenerife.
The nominees were selected from 263 submissions. The jury responsible for selecting the winners includes American producer Ben Kalina from Titmouse studio; Spanish researcher and programmer Carolina López Caballero; Sweden’s Helena Nylander, head of children’s content acquisitions at Swedish public broadcaster SVT; Brazilian animation director, screenwriter, and animator Daniel Bruson; and Leyla Formoso, CEO of French distributor and producer Prime Entertainment Group.
A video of the nominees can be seen below:
Here are a few notes on this year’s lineup:
* All three nominated feature films are from Spain, including Canarian director David Baute’s Black Butterflies, which won the Goya Award for best animated feature last month.
* Two of the titles in the best series category — Jasmine & Jambo and Jorel’s Brother — have previously won Quirino Awards.
* The two most-nominated short form projects, with three nominations apiece, are André Carrilho’s The Girl with the Occupied Eyes (Portugal) and Paulo Garcia and Natalia Gouvea’s commissioned short 47 (Brazil), produced for Café Joyeux.
* The event’s Co-Production and Business Forum, which takes places alongside the Quirino Awards, will host a new edition of the roundtable “Women in Ibero-American Animation.” This year, the roundtable will feature a revamped format designed to enhance the professional development of its participants.
* The event also announced the launch of the Ibero-American Animation Space Futures Lab, a new initiative by the Quirino Awards, in collaboration with the Ortega Marañón Foundation, to generate proposals for the development of animation in Ibero-America. The laboratory is conceived as a space for collective intelligence where professionals, institutions, and experts in animation and other sectors will work together to explore future scenarios, identify challenges and opportunities, and design innovative cooperation schemes.
