No Consensus On Best Animated Feature: Critics Choice Awards And BAFTA Awards Choose Differently
Two of the frontrunners in the Oscar race for best animated feature traded awards on Sunday evening.
Sony Pictures Animation and Netflix’ sThe Mitchells vs. The Machines won the 27th annual Critics Choice Award which was presented in both Los Angeles and London. The film was up against the same field of nominees as the upcoming Academy Awards: Encanto, Flee, Luca, and Raya and the Last Dragon.
The win capped a tremendous weekend for Mitchells, which also won eight Annie Awards, including the top prize for best feature.
Meanwhile, the 75th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), the U.K.’s equivalent of the Oscars, presented their feature animation award to Walt Disney Animation Studios’s Encanto. The Disney film was up against nearly the same field: Flee, Luca, and The Mitchells vs. The Machines.
There was an upset in the BAFTA short animation category, in which the National Film and Television School student film Do Not Feed the Pigeons by Antonin Niclass triumphed over Joanna Quinn’s Affairs of the Art.
A couple other animation awards were also handed out at each event. The visual effects honor at both Critics Choice and BAFTAs was presented to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. The Critics Choice also presented the award for animated series to Disney+’s What If…?
