New York Film Critics Circle Chooses ‘Spider-Man’ As 2018’s Best Animated Feature
The New York Film Critics Circle announced its annual awards on Thursday, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was their choice for the best animated feature of 2018.
Some may call this a surprise, but it shouldn’t be at this point. Cartoon Brew identified Spider-Man, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, as one of the year’s likely Oscars contenders last month. After yesterday’s first round of reviews for the Sony Pictures Animation film — currently 100% positive — it should be clear that this is one of the year’s exemplary animation projects.
The New York Film Critics Circle has given its best animated feature award to Disney and Pixar productions for the last three years — Coco, Zootopia, and Inside Out — but prior to that they had chosen a more diverse list of feature animation winners including The Lego Movie, The Wind Rises, Frankenweenie, The Illusionist, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Persepolis.
