The first edition of the Ibero-American Animation Quirino Awards now have a definitive date: April 6-8, 2018. The location, which has been previously announced, is the Spanish Canary island of Tenerife, which is itself a bustling spot of animation growth.

As we wrote a few months ago, the Quirinos are the first initiative to recognize the talent across the entire Ibero-American animation industry. (Ibero-America is the geographic description of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries in Central and South America, as well as the countries of Spain, Portugal, and Andorra.)

The goals of the event are multifold, but one of its key aims is to develop stronger ties between the Ibero-American animation industries on both sides of the Atlantic. To that end, the Quirinos will be comprised of both an awards ceremony (taking place on April 7) as well as a professional multi-day forum starting on April 6 that will bring together artists and producers from all of the participating countries.

The announcement of the date for the first-ever Quirinos was made at a ceremony at Pixelatl in Mexico on September 6.

The Quirino awards, honoring feature films, short films, school projects, tv shows, and online series, are sponsored by Tenerife’s tourism board, Turismo de Tenerife. Key collaborators of the event include two major industry markets/festivals: 3DWire (Segovia, Spain) and Festival by Pixelatl (Cuernavaca, Mexico).

The trophies are named (quite appropriately, we may add) in honor of the creator of the first animated feature film in history: Quirino Cristiani, who directed El Apóstol, a now-lost 70-minute Argentine production made twenty years before Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
