‘Blue Eye Samurai,’ ‘Scavengers Reign,’ ‘X-Men ’97’ Among 2024 Emmy Animation Nominations

Nominations were announced today for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, presented by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The key category we track – Outstanding Animated Program – features two perennial Fox contenders (The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers) alongside three new streaming series – Blue Eye Samurai, Scavengers Reign, and X-Men ’97. Among the new shows, Netflix’s exquisite Blue Eye Samurai is one to keep an eye on. The series was the top series winner at the Annie Awards earlier this year, notching six wins, and was also nominated for a Peabody Award.

Not to be overlooked is Scavengers Reign, the sci-fi drama that aired on Max. The series was dropped by the streamer after its first season, however, Netflix saw something in it and picked up first-season streaming rights. The Emmy nomination (and a win) could certainly help influence Netflix’s decision to order a second season, but as of now, the show remains in limbo. X-Men ’97, a revival of the Nineties X-Men: The Animated Series, is already in production on a second season; the premiere episode garnered four million global views on Disney+ within its first five days and became the most-viewed full-length animated series premiere on the platform since What If…? in 2021.

Blue Eye Samurai received a second nomination for Sound Editing for a Comedy or Drama Series and Animation. It is the only animated entry in that category.

The character voice-over performance category is filled with familiar voices: The Simpsons’ Hank Azaria (10th nomination in the category with four previous wins), Big Mouth’s Maya Rudolph (5th nomination in the category with three previous wins), and Family Guy’s Alex Borstein (6th nomination in the category with one previous win). Sterling K. Brown, who has won multiple Emmys in other categories, is nominated for the first time in the category for his work on Prime Video’s Invincible and previous Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham is also a first-time category nominee for her work on Fox’s Krapopolis.

The Short Form Animated Program Emmy, which was not presented last year, is officially no longer an award. The Television Academy has said that due to a decline in submissions, the category has combined with the the Animated Program category and “two tracks have been created, one for short form programs (between 2 – 20 minutes) and one for all other programming (over 20 minutes).”

The 76th Emmy Awards will be presented on Sunday, September 15, while the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place on Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8.
