Matte Stephens is an artist based in Peterborough, New Hampshire who paints in a style that is influenced by, in his own words, “mid 20th century industrial and graphic design like the work of Charles and Ray Eames, Alexander Girard, George Nelson/Irving Harper and fine artists of the same era like Ben Shahn and Paul Klee.” Stephens works mainly with gouache as his paint of choice, and uses an earthy color palette and simple painted textures and patterns that transport the viewer to a bygone era.
