WHAT IS THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF ARTISTIC ADVICE YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED, AND FROM WHO?
“When I was trying to find my own authentic voice as an artist, I got very similar advice from everyone: ‘Originality doesn’t exist in art because everyone gives and takes from each other constantly. Look at some of the stuff you really like, figure out why you really like it, and use that in your own work. Break down some of your favorite movies, books, artists–maybe you like the way a certain artist draws eyes, or how a specific scene in a film used color–when you find something in a piece that you like, take it. Take as much as you can. Eventually when you’ve collected enough pieces and incorporate them into your own work, you don’t recognize each individual piece, you just see the whole as its own authentic voice.'”
