Onimusha Onimusha

At last weekend’s Tudum fan event, Netflix unveiled a new anime based on Capcom’s Onimusha horror video game series.

Series details:

  • Animation studio Sublimation will produce the series, with Shinya Sugai (Dragon’s Dogma) directing. According to early descriptions, the show will be produced in an effort to appeal to long-time fans of the series, but with newcomers to the franchise in mind as well.
  • Prolific filmmaker Takashi Miike (Dead or Alive, Ichi the Killer) will serve as chief director of the show.
  • The series, like the games on which it is based, will unspool around a war-torn early Edo period Japan in which demons are not only real but wander the land.
  • The first Onimusha game was released by Capcom on the PlayStation 2 in 2001. The series was unique, although not exclusive, in that it used real actors as models for its main characters. Actors used for inspiration included Takeshi Kaneshiro (Chungking Express, House of the Flying Daggers), Yusaku Matsuda (The Family Game, Detective Story), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional, Ronin). Similarly, the Netflix series will base its main character on legendary Seven Samurai and High and Low actor Toshiro Mifune.
