Netflix will release the new Japanese/Chinese co-production Flavors of Youth, produced by Tokyo’s Comixwave Films, the studio that made Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, and Shanghai’s Haoliners Animation League.

The streaming site released a trailer today:

According to Netflix, the three-chapter anthology film “explores the simple joys of life through sensual memories and how the beating heart of love cannot be defeated by the flow of time.”

The film world premieres at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 6, 2018, in the presence of co-director Yoshitaka Takeuchi and producer Noritaka Kawaguchi. Netflix will begin streaming the film globally starting August 4, 2018.

It will be released in a limited theatrical run in Japan starting August 4 under the title Shikioriori (Poem of Seasons Woven Together).

Each of the shorts in the anthology takes place in a different Chinese city – two of the project’s directors are Chinese filmmakers and the other is Takeuchi, who has usually been in charge of cg for Shinkai’s films. The three films in the anthology are titled:

  • Hidamari no Chōshoku (Sunny Breakfast) dir. Jiaoshou Yi Xiaoxing
  • Chiisana Fashion Show (A Small Fashion Show) dir. Yoshitaka Takeuchi
  • Shanghai Koi (Shanghai Love) dir. Li Haoling
