A New Villain, Balthazar Bratt, Steals the Show In ‘Despicable Me 3’ Trailer
The 1980s are back in a big way for Despicable Me 3, thanks to the film’s ridiculous new villain, Balthazar Bratt.
Voiced by South Park co-creator Trey Parker, Bratt is a former child star who still has a fondness for the Rubik’s Cube, mixtapes, bubblegum, fingerless gloves, and MJ.
Despicable Me 3 is directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. Illumination powerhouse production designer Eric Guillon is co-director for the first time. Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio are writing the film.
It’s funny to see how the same names appear in Illumination’s film credits over and over. Unlike most new studios that invest in ideas, Illumination invested in a core group of artists, and that group has gelled over the past half-decade into a remarkable hit-making machine, pumping out wacky, lighthearted comedies better than any other feature animation studio in business today.
Though Illumination’s films couldn’t be more tonally different than Pixar’s, I’d go so far as to say that no studio has developed a more consistent and successful house style since Pixar. It’ll be fun to watch how far Illumination can push this winning streak.
Universal will release DM3 into U.S. theaters on June 30, 2017.
